ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో ఎప్పటికప్పుడు కొత్త వ్యక్తీకరణలు వస్తుంటాయి. అలాంటివాటిని గమనించి, ఉపయోగించడం సాధన చేస్తే భాష మెరుగవుతుంది. ఈవారం అలాంటి రెండు కొత్త వ్యక్తీకరణలూ, వాటిని సంభాషణల్లో ఎలా ఉపయోగించవచ్చో తెలుసుకుందాం!!
Jayakumar: Have you met Jayaram of late?He has been ill for quite some time (నువ్వు ఈ మధ్య జయరామ్‌ను చూశావా? కొద్ది కాలంగా అతడికి ఆరోగ్యం బాలేదు).

Doraswamy: How is he now? Is he all right? I didn’t know that he has been ill. I must go and see him as soon as possible (ఎలా ఉన్నాడిప్పుడు? ఇప్పుడు బాగానే ఉన్నాడా? నువ్వు చెప్పేవరకూ అతడు జబ్బుతో ఉన్నట్లు నాకు తెలియదు. వీలైనంత త్వరగా అతన్ని చూసి రావాలి).

Jayakumar: You had better. He has no appetite and doesn’t eat anything. The doctors say his position is critical (త్వరగా వెళ్లి చూస్తే మంచిది. అతడికి ఆకలి లేదు, ఏమీ తినడం లేదు. అతని పరిస్థితి చాలా విషమంగా ఉందని డాక్టర్లు చెబుతున్నారు).

Doraswamy: How is his condition now?(అతడి పరిస్థితి ఇప్పుడు ఎలా ఉంది?)

Jayakumar: I am afraid his condition is very critical. He may not survive. You had better go and see him immediately. The doctors say that he has a fat chance of survival (అతడి పరిస్థితి విషమంగా ఉందని నాకు భయంగా ఉంది. బతకకపోవచ్చు. వీలైనంత త్వరగా వెళ్లి చూడటం మంచిది. బతికే అవకాశాలు చాలా తక్కువని డాక్టర్లు అంటున్నారు).

Doraswamy: Oh, my God, he might be in the throes of death. He might come down to the wire. That is what the doctors say (దేవుడా! అయితే అతడు చనిపోయే స్థితిలో ఉన్నాడేమో. అతడు చివరి వరకూ బతికుండకపోవచ్చని డాక్టర్లు అంటున్నారు).

Jayakumar: I am afraid that he might not survive (అతడు బతకడేమో అని నాకు భయంగా ఉంది).

Doraswamy: I didn’t know that he was ill. Otherwise I would have gone to him, and seen him (అతడు జబ్బుతో ఉన్నాడని నాకు తెలియనే లేదు. లేదంటే అతడి దగ్గరికి చూడటానికి వెళ్లేవాడిని).

Jayakumar: The sooner you go the better it will be. His condition is almost on the edge (నువ్వెంత త్వరగా వెళితే అంత మంచిది. అతడి పరిస్థితి దాదాపుగా చివరి దశలో ఉంది).

Look at the following sentences from the conversation

1) A fat chance of survival = Little or no chance of being alive (బతికి ఉండే అవకాశం లేకపోవడం).

Subhash: Our friend Kamalakar is in a critical condition. The doctors say he may not be alive for more than three or four days (మన స్నేహితుడు కమలాకర్‌ చాలా ప్రమాదకర పరిస్థితిలో ఉన్నాడు. మూడు, నాలుగు రోజులకు మించి బతకలేడని డాక్టర్లు అంటున్నారు).

Jayanth: How is his condition now? I didn’t know that his position is on the edge of death. Do you say that he has fat chance of survival?(ఇప్పుడెలా ఉన్నాడు? అతడు చావుబతుకుల మధ్య కొట్టుమిట్టాడుతున్నాడని నాకు తెలీదు. అతడు బతికే అవకాశమే లేదంటావా?)

Subhash: That is so (అలాగే ఉన్నాడు మరి).

2) Come down to the wire = Something that is decided at the last moment (చివరి నిమిషంలో నిర్ణయించేది).

Preethi: Our friend Suseela is not able to decide whether to attend the dinner or not. She is in two minds (మన స్నేహితురాలు ఆ విందుకు వెళ్దామా వద్దా అని ఆలోచిస్తోంది. ఆమె రెండు ఆలోచనల్లో ఉంది).

Karuna: She may come down to the wire at the last moment. I am sure she is going to attend the dinner party. I am sure of it (ఆమె చివరి నిమిషంలో నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంటుంది. ఆమె ఆ విందు భోజనానికి కచ్చితంగా వెళుతుంది. నాకు ఆ నమ్మకం ఉంది).
