పేపర్‌ లేదా మ్యాగజీన్‌ను మన చేతుల్లోకి తీసుకున్నపుడు ఒక్కో పేజీని చదువుతూవెళ్లం. క్షుణ్ణంగా చదవటానికి ముందు ఓసారి పేజీలను తిరగేస్తాం. ఈ వ్యక్తీకరణను సమర్థంగా చెప్పే Phrasal Verb ఏమిటో తెలుసా? దాన్ని ఉదాహరణలతో నేర్చుకుందాం!

Venkatesh: What are you doing, Nataraj? (ఏం చేస్తున్నావ్‌ నటరాజ్‌?)
Nataraj: Just flipping through the magazine, for I have nothing better to do(ఈ మేగజీన్‌ పేజీలను తిరగేస్తున్నా, అంతకన్నా మెరుగైన పనేమీ లేదు కాబట్టి).

Venkatesh: I heard that you and Krishna had a heated exchange yesterday. Is that true? (నిన్న నీకూ, కృష్ణకూ చాలా తీవ్రంగా వివాదం జరిగిందని విన్నాను. నిజమేనా?)
Nataraj: He was finding fault with me for nothing, and I had to bite back (నేనేం చేయనప్పటికీ నన్ను తను తప్పు పట్టాడు. అందుకని నేనూ ఘాటుగా సమాధానం ఇచ్చా).

Venkatesh: He is always like that, trying to pick holes in the behaviour of some one or the other (అతనెప్పుడూ అంతే, ఇతరుల్లో ఏదో ఒక తప్పు పడుతూనే ఉంటాడు).
Nataraj: I do not know when he will improve, and if he will improve at all (అతనెప్పుడు మెరుగవుతాడో తెలీడం లేదు నాకు, అసలు తప్పులు పట్టడం నుంచి బయటపడతాడా అని కూడా నాకు సందేహమే).

Venkatesh: OK, let us leave that alone. Are we leaving for Hyderabad tomorrow?(సరేలే, వాడిని వదిలెయ్‌. రేపు మనం హైదరాబాద్‌కు వెళ్తున్నామా?)
Nataraj: Yea, I am ready. We should head off at 6 in the morning tomorrow, promptly. Otherwise we are sure to miss the opportunity(అవును. నేను సిద్ధంగానే ఉన్నాను. రేపు మనం ఆరింటికల్లా బయల్దేరాలి, ఆలస్యం చేయకుండా. లేకపోతే మనం ఆ అవకాశాన్ని కోల్పోతాం).

Venkatesh: Just give me a call, and I will at your door step (నాకోసారి ఫోన్‌ చేయి, నీ తలుపు ముంగిట ఉంటాను).

Look at the following phrasal verbs from the conversation:

1) Flip through a magazine = Look for a short while at the pages of the magazine (Without reading it thoroughly) (నాకోసారి ఫోన్‌ చేయి, నీ తలుపు ముంగిట ఉంటాను).

a) Prabhakar: What happened yesterday? I heard that some thieves entered your place (నిన్న ఏం జరిగింది? మీ ఇంట్లో దొంగలు పడ్డారని విన్నాను).

Sukumar: Alone at home, I was flipping through the pages of story book, when I heard a sudden noise. I became alert and phoned the police, but the thieves by then had escaped. Nothing stolen, fortunately(ఒంటరిగా ఇంట్లో ఉండి, ఏదో కథల పుస్తకం పేజీలు తిరగేస్తున్నా. ఇంతలో ఉన్నట్టుండి శబ్దం వినపడింది. నేను కాస్త చురుకుగా పోలీసులకు ఫోన్‌ చేశా. అప్పటికే దొంగలు పారిపోయారు. అదృష్టవశాత్తూ ఏం దొంగిలించలేదు).

b) Sudha: I had nothing to do yesterday, it being a holiday. I whiled away my time looking through a cookery book (నిన్న సెలవవడం వల్ల ఏం చేయడానికీ పాలుపోలేదు. ఏదో వంటల పుస్తకం తిరగేస్తూ కాలం గడిపేశా).

Nalini: Did you learn anything, or did you just flipped through the pages of the book? (ఏమైనా నేర్చుకున్నావా లేదా ­ఊ­రికనే పేజీలు తిరగేశావా?)

2) Bite back = Do something bad to others because they have done bad to you (మనకు కీడు చేసినవాళ్లకు మనం కీడు చేయడం).

a) Sudhakar: For no fault of mine, he abused me in a very bad language (నేనేం తప్పు చేయకుండానే నన్ను తను బూతులు తిట్టాడు).

Nikhil: You should have bitten back him. He takes pleasure in hurting others' feelings (అతన్ని నువ్వు కూడా దూషించి ఉండాల్సింది. అతనికి ఇతరుల భావాలను దెబ్బతీయడం ఒక సరదా).

b) Chalam: Seshachalam is quite harmless. Even if others hurt him, he stays quiet and smiles (శేషాచలం కీడు చేసే రకం కాదు. ఇతరులు అతన్ని బాధించినా ఊ­రికనే ఉంటాడు, చిరునవ్వు చిందిస్తాడు).

Sekhar: Yea, so he is. But I don't know why he does not bite back at others when they insult him (అవును, అతనంతే. కానీ నాకర్థం కానిది ఇతరులు తనను అవమానించినప్పుడు, ఎందుకతను వాళ్లను తిరిగి తిట్టడని).

3) Head off = Start a journey or leave a place (ప్రయాణానికి బయల్దేరడం).

a) Balaram: Jayaram is not yet here. Why is he so unpunctual?(జయరాం ఇక్కడ లేడు. అతనెప్పుడూ ఎందుకు ఆలస్యం చేస్తాడు?)

Vishnu: He had phoned me that he was heading off in the morning itself. I don't know the reason why he hasn't been here still (నాకతను ఫోన్‌ చేశాడు, తాను పొద్దున్నే బయల్దేరతానని. ఇంకా ఇక్కడ ఉండకపోవడానికి కారణమేంటో నాకు తెలీడం లేదు).

b) Subbarao: Dinakar is always late. He never arrives at a place promptly (దినకర్‌ ఎప్పుడూ ఆలస్యమే. సరైన సమయానికి ఎక్కడికీ ఎప్పుడూ రాడు).

Mallesh: That is always the trouble with him. He promises to head off at the proper time, but delays it somehow or the other(ఎప్పుడూ అతనితో అదే చిక్కు. సరైన సమయానికి బయల్దేరి వస్తానని చెబుతాడు కానీ, ఏదోవిధంగా ఆలస్యం చేస్తాడు).
