Escape by the skin of one’s teeth అంటే?

కొన్నిసార్లు కొన్ని ప్రమాదాలనుంచి కొంచెంలో బయటపడుతుంటాం కదా!  తెలుగులో అయితే ‘త్రుటిలో తప్పించుకోవడం’, ‘వెంట్రుకవాసిలో తప్పించుకోవడం’ అని ఉపయోగిస్తుంటాం. మరి ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో దాని వ్యక్తీకరణనూ, ఉపయోగించే తీరునూ ఈవారం తెలుసుకుందామా!Sitharam: Our friend Lakshman takes too many risks. He never heeds to anybody’s advice (మన మిత్రుడు లక్ష్మణ్‌ చాలా ప్రమాదాలను ఎదుర్కొంటాడు. ఎవరి సలహా వినడు). 
Jayanth: What exactly happened and what is the cause of your complaint?  (అసలేం జరిగింది? అతని మీద నీ ఆరోపణకు కారణమేంటి?) 
Sitharam: The other day he was crossing the railway line without caring about the trainrushing in. He just escaped by the skin of his teeth. Fortunately he was not knocked down by the train (ఈమధ్య ఒకరోజు రైలు వేగంగా వస్తున్నా కూడా  రైల్వే లైన్‌ను దాటుతున్నాడు. అదృష్టవశాత్తూ ఆ రైలు అతన్ని ఢీకొనలేదు. కొద్దిలో ప్రమాదం తప్పింది). 
Jayanth: That is always the trouble with him. Yes, he takes unnecessary risks and never pays heed to anybody’s advice (అదే అతనితో వచ్చిన చిక్కు. అనవసర ప్రమాదాలను కొని తెచ్చుకుంటాడు, ఎవరి సలహా వినడు). 
Sitharam: His escaping being hit by the train is most remarkable. If the train had been a little faster he would have been dead by now(అతన్ని ఆ రైలు ఢీకొనకపోవడం నిజంగా చెప్పుకోదగ్గ విషయం. ఆ రైలు ఇంకాస్త వేగంగా వచ్చుంటే ఈపాటికి చనిపోయుండేవాడు). 
Jayanth: His escape was very narrow. I saw it too. Otherwise he would have been dead by now (అతను త్రుటిలో తప్పించుకున్నాడు. నేనూ చూశాను. లేదంటే ఈపాటికి చనిపోయుండేవాడు). 
Sitharam: He thinks he is a canny person and that nobody can beat him in any area(తానేదో చాలా తెలివికల వాడిననీ, తననా విషయంలో ఎవరూ మించరనీ అనుకుంటాడు). 
Jayanth: I’m afraid that he will someday meet his death by accident (ఏదో ఒకరోజు ప్రమాదం వల్ల చనిపోతాడేమోనని నా భయం). 
Sitharam: That may be the case (అదే జరగొచ్చు).

Now look at the following sentences from the conversation:

1) Escape by the skin of one’s teeth = a very narrow escape (వెంట్రుక వాసిలో తప్పించుకోవడం). 
Ramesh: Vaman was crossing the road without looking either way on the road. Fortunately he had a narrow escape (వామన్‌ అటూఇటూ చూడకుండా రోడ్డు దాటుతున్నాడు. త్రుటిలో తప్పించుకున్నాడు). 
Varun: Yea, I saw it too. If he had been a little late, he would have been hit by the lorry. He was fortunate to escape by the skin of his teeth (అవును, అది నేనూ చూశాను. అతను ఇంకాస్త ఆలస్యంగా రోడ్డు దాటుంటే లారీ అతన్ని ఢీ కొట్టుండేది. అదృష్టం బాగుండబట్టి కొద్దిలో తప్పించుకున్నాడు). 
2) A canny person = A clever person (తెలివైనవారు) 
Chandan: Our friend Subba Rao thinks that he is quite clever and takesunnecessary risks (మన స్నేహితుడు సుబ్బారావు తాను చాలా తెలివైనవాడిని అనుకుంటాడు. ఆ అభిప్రాయంతో అనవసర ప్రమాదాలను ఎదుర్కొంటాడు). 
Sekhar: He thinks he is a canny person and nothing can harm him. But surely he will know what it is to think too high of himself (అతను తాను చాలా తెలివైనవాడిననీ, తనకే కీడూ జరగదని అనుకుంటుంటాడు. కానీ ఒకరోజు కచ్చితంగా తననను తాను చాలా గొప్పగా అనుకోవడం వల్ల జరిగే కీడేంటో అతనికి తప్పక తెలుస్తుంది).
